How can a brain tumor lodged in the head of an 11-year-old girl disappear mysteriously? Even the surgeon is unable to explain.

Quoted from the Daily Mail, this story began when Roxli Doss in June was diagnosed with a high-level brain tumor known as Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Diffuse (DIPG). DIPG is a very rare and very aggressive form of cancer that is usually found in children between the ages of five and nine.

Roxli complains of a persistent headache and is easily tired. This is because the tumor is located at the base of the brain and the upper part of the spine. Tumors suppress the area of the brain called pons, which is responsible for several body functions, such as breathing, sleep, and blood pressure.

Over time, the tumor affects heart rate, breathing, swallowing, vision, and balance. Symptoms also include problems with eye movements, facial weakness, difficulty walking, strange limb movements and problems with balance.

Because this type of tumor is quite dangerous, Roxli had to undergo radiation treatment for about three months.

After that, on September 7, Roxli examined MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to see the condition of the tumor. How shocking, the malignant tumor did not appear again.

"When I first saw Roxli's MRI scan, it was completely unbelievable. Tumors were not detected on MRI scans, this is really unusual," said Dr. Virginia Harrod, a neuro-oncology specialist who handled Roxli.

This is a big question. But based on the Michael Mosier Foundation, radiation can shrink DIPG tumors in 70 percent of patients. And usually radiation can also extend a patient's life by about three months.

Meanwhile, according to an essay written by Dr. Momna Hejmadi, a senior instructor in the department of biology and biochemistry at the University of Bath in England, one reason the tumor can disappear is because the body's immune system also triggers the body against certain antigens.

"The rationale underlying this phenomenon is that the local immune response after surgery is enough to stop the growth of the remaining tumor," he wrote.

Having never found a case like Roxli, doctors still require him to undergo further treatment to prevent new cancer cells from growing. And the doctor decided to do immunotherapy on Roxli, a type of treatment to improve the body's defenses.

"We don't know how long he will be healthy and, look at him, he only does extraordinary things," said his father Scott.
