World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated every April 2. Different from before, this year's World Autism Awareness Day took place amid the pandemic outbreak of the COVID-19 corona virus in the world.

UN Secretary General António Guterres warned not to let the corona virus outbreak cause a setback for the rights possessed by persons with autism and their representative organizations to access public facilities.

"Human rights apply to all, including the rights of persons with disabilities, must not be violated during a pandemic," Guterres said as quoted by the official UN website on Thursday (2/4/2020).

According to him, people with autism have the right to self-determination, independence and autonomy, as well as the right to education and work with others.

But the disruption that occurs in various aspects due to COVID-19 may exacerbate the obstacles faced by persons with autism in exercising these rights.

"People with autism must never experience discrimination when seeking medical treatment. They must continue to have access to the support system needed to remain in their homes and communities during the epidemic," he said.

"We all have a role to play in ensuring that the needs of autism affected by COVID-19 are met during this difficult period," Guterres added.

Information regarding corona virus prevention must be provided in a format that is accessible to people with special needs. The same thing must be done in applying school policy methods and working from home.
