    Nashville Shooting

A 28-year-old woman armed with heavy firearms shot dead three children and three staff at an elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, United States (US). The young woman was shot dead in a shootout with police.

"This shooter is a female. She appears to be a juvenile although her identity has not been confirmed at this time," said Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron.

"We know that he was armed with at least two assault rifles and a revolver," he said.

Armed with at least two assault rifles and a revolver, the shooter entered the Christian Covenant School from a side entrance before opening fire.

The shooter, believed by police to be a former student at the school, fired several shots as he advanced through the building.

Officers were on the scene within about 15 minutes of receiving the first distress call around 10:00 a.m. local time, returning police fire before he was shot dead, Aaron said.

Mass school shootings are particularly common in the United States, where the proliferation of firearms has soared in recent years, although female shooters are extremely rare. There was no initial indication of a motive for the Nashville attack.

Police spokesman Aaron said officials were still working to identify the three students and three staff who died in the attack, as well as the shooter. He said there were no other injuries.

"All remaining students can be escorted out of the building along with faculty and staff," said Kendra Loney of the Nashville fire department.

"But we are sure that they are hearing about the chaos going on around this, so we have specialists and mental health professionals who are on site for reunification for both students and families."
